Historic Saint Paul, through the Restore Saint Paul loan program, is stabilizing the front porch on a Dayton’s Bluff neighborhood landmark, the Giesen-Hausler House. The prominent brick mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places due to its association with prominent Saint Paulites and its remarkable architectural features.
Loan Program Projects
The owner of the Size Matters Fashion Shop keeps her prices affordable for East Side residents. She is intent on helping her customers dress nicely. Similarly, she wants to make East 7th Street a better-looking place to do business. Regrettably, her simple 1910 storefront had lost much of its original character. Garish signage and painted advertisements detracted from the streetscape.
The Olaf Lee House, a National Register of Historic Places property, is located in the Payne-Phalen neighborhood on Saint Paul’s East Side. The house, built in 1905, was designed by Clarence Johnston, the famous Saint Paul architect. According to the National Register nomination “the house is architecturally significant for its unusual eclectic design which combines Swiss Chalet, Craftsman and other elements into a convincing composition, making it the most sophisticated turn of the century house in the Payne-Phalen neighborhood.”
Porch Stabilization on Edgerton
The front porch on this Queen Anne style house on Edgerton Street in the Payne Avenue neighborhood was falling off the house. Aditionally, the character of the house was covered by 1950s-style aluminum siding. The Restore Saint Paul loan program provided the homeowners with a low-interest loan and technical assistance to help stabilize the porch and replace the siding.
