HSP Board members Michael Koop and Brian Horrigan conducted architectural biking tours of the Summit-University neighborhood on back-to-back evenings of June 24th and 25th on behalf of Smart Trips, a new organization promoting transit alternatives in St. Paul.

On June 14, 2008, Historic Saint Paul and the Payne Phalen District 5 Planning Council hosted Free Design Saturday, an open house event for Payne Phalen residents. Home owners brought photographs of their houses and met with architects to discuss ideas for improving their homes.

Minnesota Public Radio recently visited several intersections along the Central Corridor light rail transit line to document University Avenue’s colorful past and evolving future. Visit University Avenue: A Work in Progress to hear stories and view slide shows about the history of University Avenue and efforts to preserve the street’s cultural heritage.

Tenth Anniversary Party at the Lightner House

Over 125 people gathered at the Lightner House, a Cass Gilbert-designed architectural treasure on Summit Avenue, on May 16th to celebrate Historic Saint Paul’s Tenth Anniversary. The annual fund-raising party was an opportunity to acknowledge Historic Saint Paul’s founders, past and current board members, staff, and all of the organization’s supporters.

Rock of the Ages makes Ten Most Endangered List

The Rock of the Ages Church (originally St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church) was listed on the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota’s 2008 Ten Most Endangered Historic Places List. Historic Saint Paul partnered with the Greater Frogtown Community Development Corporation to nominate the structure.

Cheers to Saint Paul!

Beer is a powerful motivator. Despite a fierce rain/snowstorm, a large crowd gathered at Summit Brewery on April 10th to learn about the history of the brewing industry in Saint Paul. Historic Saint Paul’s Preservation Talk (What’s Brewing in Saint Paul?) featured Doug Hoverson, the author of Land of Amber Waters: The History of Brewing in Minnesota.

Challenge Grant from the Katherine B. Andersen Fund

The Katherine B. Andersen Fund of the Saint Paul Foundation has issued a challenge grant to help Historic Saint Paul build its base of operating support. The challenge grant will match all new and increased gifts to Historic Saint Paul (up to $20,000) in 2008.

Nearly 100 people gathered on March 5th, 2008 at the Central Corridor Resource Center on University Avenue, to learn how cultural resources—from National Landmarks to vernacular buildings—figure into Central Corridor Light Rail Transit (LRT) planning and to share their thoughts on how these resources might be integrated into LRT station area planning.

Giesen House Front Porch Restoration

Historic Saint Paul, through the Restore Saint Paul loan program, is stabilizing the front porch on a Dayton’s Bluff neighborhood landmark, the Giesen-Hausler House. The prominent brick mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places due to its association with prominent Saint Paulites and its remarkable architectural features.
